Livingstone Supports Education and Clean Water in Zambia through Project Luangwa

For several years, Livingstone has supported Project Luangwa’s education development program, near the town of Livingstone in Zambia.

After heavy rains caused the collapse of a classroom in 2013, Livingstone supported the reconstruction of the school, including a four-classroom block and a house for the teacher. This phase of the project was completed in 2015.

The lack of a sustainable water supply severely hampered the building process. Therefore, with Livingstone’s ongoing support, in 2016 the project constructed wells and provided water pumps, as well as toilet facilities with running water.

As the project expanded, additional donors came on board in 2016 to support the development of a further three classrooms, provision of school uniforms and tablet-based learning systems for the students, and the recruitment of another three assistant teachers.

Because access to sufficient water remains the principal issue in the area, exacerbated this year by drought, over the next twelve months the project will seek additional boreholes. In order to give children who graduate further opportunities beyond the family smallholding, Livingstone is also supporting the development of vocational training courses, in areas such as plumbing, electrics, mechanics, and agriculture, and increasing its sponsorship program.
