Ball completes £4.5bn Rexam acquisition

Ball Corporation has finally completed its $6.1bn (£4.5bn) takeover of Rexam today, making it the largest manufacturer of beverage cans in the world.

Barry Sheehan, Associate Director at Livingstone, said despite the magnitude of the divestures required, Ball’s management has been resolute in their commitment to the deal.

“By merging two of the three leaders in the global canning industry, the combined business will have significant scale and is expected to deliver  $300m in annual synergies in three years. While the deal will expand Ball’s geographical footprint and product offering, pressure arising from consolidation of their end customers, such as AB InBev which announced a £70bn a takeover of FTSE 100 rival SABMiller last year, is likely to have been another, more defensive, motivating factor behind the transaction.”
